The search for two trampers missing in a remote area of bush near Nelson has entered its third day, with still no sign of the young duo.

Jessica O'Connor and Dion Reynolds, both 23, entered the Kahurangi National Park on 9 May - the pair failed to return back in time and have not been heard from since.

On Thursday night a Royal New Zealand Airforce helicopter scanned the dense bush beneath it for any sign of heat or light  but found nothing.

On Friday the helicopter will continue to sweep the landscape from above while ground teams comb the forests, hills and rivers for any sign of the pair.

Police are using search dogs, drones and land teams to hunt for the trampers but so far have found little sign of them.

Footprints and an abandoned campsite discovered near the Webb River on Thursday have not been confirmed to belong to O'Connor and Reynolds.

Police are asking for anyone who has been around the Anatori, Webb, Kokopu, Independent and Fraser rivers since 8 May and who may have seen the pair to get in touch
