A pit of tyres is on fire in central Canterbury and it's causing large amounts of thick, black smoke to pour into the air.
Video and photos show smoke clouds swirling into the air from an industrial site in Rolleston on Weedons Rd.
Smoke is drifting across State Highway 1 and drivers are being urged by Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) to take caution and keep their eyes on the road. Weedons Rd is currently closed to traffic.
FENZ says it was called to the area at 4:25pm on Sunday and ten crews are responding to the fire. No buildings are currently in danger.
Any residents concerned about the smoke should close their doors and windows, and turn off heat pumps.
