Two people have been killed in a serious crash in Palmerston North.

A third person is in a serious condition.

The two-car crash happened on Napier Road, just after 10pm on Friday.

Only nine people lost their lives in April, when the country went into lockdown - a record low. Fifteen have now died since the start of May.

"As volumes increase on our road, so does what we call the collective risk,"  said Acting Supt Gini Welch.

"Think about each other and take your time, be patient, be kind. That applies to your driving as well as every other part of your life."
