Two dead, third injured in serious crash between Taupō and Napier

Two people are dead after a crash on State Highway 5 between Taupō and Napier.

The two-vehicle crash happened near the settlement of Te Pohue, northwest of Napier, at around 3:15pm on Saturday.

Police say two people have died, while another has serious injuries and has been taken to hospital.

The cause of the crash is under investigation and the road was closed until 7:50pm. 

The New Zealand Transport Agency says a temporary 70km/h speed restriction is now in place.
