Two people dead following glider crash near Taupō

Two people are dead after a glider crashed at Mount Tauhara near Taupō on Sunday afternoon.

Police say it was notified at about 2:45pm and emergency services are at the scene.

Due to darkness, weather and location, the bodies and glider will remain in place overnight under police guard.

The Tauhara Mountain Trust says it has placed a rahui on the mountain for five days, ending at sunrise on June 6. This is effective immediately and the Trust asks the public and whanau respect the rahui.
