New Zealand is forecast to have a reprieve from the rain and winds that battered the country during the weekend, with fine and dry weather due to settle in for the rest of the week.

Many parts of the upper North Island had rainfall in excess of 50mm throughout Sunday night and Monday morning as a frontal system crossed the country, MetService says, but this week's weather is set to end on a warmer note.

"High pressure and settled conditions let the temperatures rebound, the winds die out and give us some sun to enjoy in our bubbles," MetService meteorologist Tui McInnes says.

A southerly change is moving up the North Island on Monday, which brings the potential for intense showers, thunder and strong winds before the settled weather moves in.

"It's not quite winter yet, so this cold blast does serve as a reminder that winter isn't far away," McInnes says.

Parts of the South Island are forecast to have showers for the rest of the week. Southern Fiordland and coastal Southland are expected to see this rain on Wednesday, with Invercargill due to receive some heavy rain with hail. And on Thursday there'll be showers on the west coast and in the south. It will be fine in other areas.

The cooler temperatures have brought road snowfall warnings for many of the South Island's alpine roads.

MetService says Lewis Pass and Porters Pass are expected to have snow on Tuesday, and one to three centimetres of snow may settle on the road above 800 metres. Arthur's Pass, Lindis Pass and the Crown Range Rd are forecast to have snow showers. Up to two centimetres of snow may settle near the summit or above 700 metres on these roads.

There are no road snowfall warnings for Napier-Taupo Rd, Desert Rd, Rimutaka Hill Rd, Haast Pass, Milford Rd, Dunedin to Waitati Highway.
