A 37-year-old man has succumbed to his injuries a week after being struck by a car in the central Auckland suburb of Ponsonby.

Gregory John Spooner was walking near the corner of Ponsonby Rd and Hopetoun St when a car collided with him at about 7:15pm on Sunday, May 31.

He was rushed to Auckland City Hospital, but police have now confirmed he died a week later at Auckland City Hospital on Sunday, June 7.

"We extend our sympathies to Gregory's loved ones at this time," police said in a statement sent to media.

"Gregory's death will be referred to the Coroner, with the police investigation into the crash still ongoing at this time."

Spooner, a finance manager at accounting company Grant Thornton, is survived by his parents Jean and Robert and his twin brother Michael, a death notice in The Press reads.

"Will be sadly missed by family and friends. Gregory's funeral will be held in Auckland," it says.

Of 29 cities around the world, Auckland has the second highest fatality rate for pedestrians, according to Greater Auckland.

In 2016, following public feedback, Auckland Transport (AT) proposed safety improvements to Ponsonby Rd to make it a more "pedestrian-friendly environment".

The improvements included raised speed tables to create a slower-speed environment at intersections, upgraded footpaths, new street furniture and trees, and renewed street lights, according to AT. Construction on these improvements finished in 2018.
