A child has died after suspectedly falling down a slip in Whatatutu on Sunday.
The tragic news comes after police were notified at about 4pm that the child hadn't returned from a walk in the area, just north of Gisborne.
The child was found by a family member a short time later, police say. They had already passed away by this time.
"Initial indications are that they may have fallen down a slip," police said in a statement.
The child's death has now been referred to the Coroner.
Police will not be releasing any more information until the child's family have all been notified.
