A convicted murderer is on the run from the police in Canterbury.

Melissa Wepa is sought by police as the 46-year-old has a warrant for her arrest.

She was sentenced to life in prison in 1997 for murdering Caroline Gardiner in Porirua - stabbing her 50 times and throwing her down a bank.

While in prison, she was charged with almost biting off an inmate’s nipple during a fight and escaped twice.

She was released in 2012.

Police said in a statement she is described as being 157cm tall and of medium build.

"If you see her or have any information on her whereabouts please call Police on 105, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111," said a post on the Canterbury Police Facebook page. Police did not say what Wepa is wanted for.
