Disappearance of Northland woman Bridget Simmonds being treated as suspicious

The case of a missing Northland woman is now being treated as suspicious after new evidence from the public, police say.

Bridget Simmonds was reported missing on March 6, 2019, 11 days after being dropped off by her mother at the Regent Countdown in Whangārei.

Detective Senior Sergeant John Clayton says the new information means they have "grave concerns that something sinister may have happened to Bridget".

He says a woman they believe to be Simmonds took a taxi from Whangārei to a property in Parakao where she used to live.

Police searched the property, along with others nearby. The dive squad was also involved in the search.

In March Simmonds' mother, Carol, issued a heartbreaking plea for the public to help her find her daughter.

"We really need closure, we miss her so much and not knowing what happened to her is very hard to deal with," Carol said in a statement.

"If anyone has heard anything or knows anything please let us know so that we can move forward and take the next step rather than constantly wondering all of the time."

On February 23, CCTV footage shows Simmonds making a bank transaction at an ATM after spending the night in Kerikeri with Carol. The two then travelled to Whangarei.

Police would like to hear from anyone who saw Simmonds at a property on Wilson Road on February 23, 2019.

Police also want to speak to a member of the public who contacted Crimestoppers after seeing the last appeal.

Anyone with information can call 09 430 4555 and all calls to this number will be treated in confidence.

The phone line will be manned 8am-5pm Monday to Friday, and anyone who wants to call outside those hours can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
