Eight hurt in crash after police chase abandoned

Eight people are hurt after a vehicle crashed following a police chase in Christchurch.

Police told Newshub they tried to pull over a "suspicious" vehicle at 4:22am on Sunday. The driver didn't stop, and a short pursuit was abandoned "due to the nature of driving".

"The vehicle was later found by police on Bridge St, Rakaia at around 4:40am where it had collided with a fence and rolled," they said.

There were eight people in the vehicle. Two are critically injured and six others "have been transported to hospital".

The serious crash unit is investigating. Bridge St remains closed, and may be "for some time", police say.
