A man has been arrested for allegedly grabbing a child's hand in Māngere on Thursday morning while on their way to school with a parent.

Police said the incident happened on Hall Ave, Favona at 9:15am on Thursday.

The man then fled on foot but as a result of a police investigation, he was arrested and charged with assault on Friday.

"He is due to appear in the Manukau District Court tomorrow [Saturday]," police said in a statement.

No harm was caused to the child but Detective Senior Sergeant Tom Gollan said the incident caused some concern to the community.

It appeared to be an isolated incident, he said, adding there were no further risks to the public.
