Matthew Hunt tribute: Police across New Zealand to observe one minute's silence

Police across all New Zealand districts will observe one minute's silence on Friday morning to honour Constable Matthew Hunt, who was shot dead during a routine traffic stop last week.

Police commissioner Andrew Coster said it was an event "none of us ever want or should experience".

"I have ordered all police flags to fly at half-mast tomorrow, and we have invited staff to observe a minute's silence wherever they are at 10:37am."

Police districts are encouraged to mark the occasion in any way that's appropriate to them, from small gatherings and wreath-laying, to brief pauses of reflection as their way to acknowledge their lost colleague.

Deputy Commissioner Wally Haumaha will pay tribute at the flagpole at Police National Headquarters in Wellington, while staff and recruits at the Royal New Zealand Police College in Porirua will gather at the Memorial Wall for a wreath-laying ceremony and to observe one minute's silence.

Police tributes around the country will be filmed as part of a video tribute to be shared later in the day.
