Body found in Grafton following firearms incident in St Johns, Auckland

A man has died following a firearms incident on Monday morning in St Johns, east Auckland.

Police confirmed the man's death following the discovery of a body in downtown Auckland, roughly seven kilometres away from the scene of the firearms incident in St Johns.

At roughly 6:15am on Monday, emergency services responded to reports of gunshots followed by screaming at a property on St Johns Road. A section of the road between Dorchester Street and Ipswich Place was subsequently closed.

In a statement issued later on Monday morning, police confirmed a vehicle fled the scene before stopping at a second location on Parkfield Terrace in Grafton, where the man died.

A section of the Grafton street remains cordoned off as police and forensic specialists work at the scene. A tent labelled "Specialist Search Group" was erected by officers over the spot where the body was discovered.

Although police understand the incident will be "unsettling" for the community, initial indications suggest the parties involved were known to each other.

Authorities are currently speaking with witnesses and working to understand the circumstances of the incident.

Enquiries to locate those responsible are ongoing and anyone who has information that may help the investigation is encouraged to call police on 105.
