Police are hunting for a vehicle connected to the death of a man on Monday morning.

Clifford Umuhuri, aged 47, was found dead on Parkfield Terrace in Grafton early on Monday morning.

Police say he was in a dark-coloured Mazda with three other people when they met up with another vehicle in St Johns Road. Shots were fired, and the car carrying Umuhuri fled the scene.

Its occupants called emergency services but it was too late.

Police are now searching for the other car, which they say is a silver four-door sedan.

Anyone who saw the vehicle between Glen Innes and Grafton between 5:30am and 6:30am is urged to call police.

Detective Inspector Lloyd Schmid says police are closely examining CCTV footage of the area.

"The enquiry team are working hard to hold to account the person or persons responsible for Mr Umuhuri's death," he said on Wednesday.

"I also continue to appeal to those people in the public who may know more about this to do the right thing and contact police."
