Returning Kiwis in quarantine in Rotorua's Ibis Hotel have been put into lockdown.

A woman in quarantine who had returned from Australia and did not want to be named, said they received a notice about being in lockdown around 11.30am on Wednesday morning.

"We weren't told why. We were outside in our exercise area then we were asked by security/military to return back to our rooms. Then we arrived to our rooms to a note saying we're in lockdown until further notice."

She said the lockdown was well managed, "it was quite calm."

Hotel occupants have been issued with a notice labelled 'lockdown procedure' stating "you are required to stay in your room until further notice."

It is not clear if the Sudima Hotel, which is also being used as a managed isolation facility, has been contacted to  placed into lockdown.

Both the Ibis and Sudima Hotels have been contacted for comment.
