The body of a tramper swept down a Hawke's Bay river has been recovered.

Police were alerted on Monday afternoon by a tramper that their companion had been swept down the Makaroro River near the bottom of the Gold Ridge Track when trying to cross it.

The man's body was located and recovered on Tuesday morning with the assistance of a Fire and Emergency drone.

Police have offered their sympathies to the man's family and friends. They have also thanked Land Search and Rescue volunteers and the Hawke's Bay surf life savers who helped with the search.
