More than 3000 people have reported feeling a 3.3 magnitude earthquake that struck near Christchurch on Saturday morning.

About 10am, the quake struck at a depth of just 5km. GeoNet said its epicentre was 5km south of Christchurch and described it as "light".

The majority of those who reported feeling the quake were in the Canterbury area.

"That was a short and sharp juddering one. Heard it zipping along, then bang! Was one of those touch and go ones where you clench everything you have and hope that it doesn't suddenly turn into a big one," one Twitter user said of the quake.

"Only 3.3? Felt stronger than that to me! it was very nearby and very shallow," another wrote.

"That felt so big," said another.

It's not the first shake in New Zealand this week. Nearly 10,000 New Zealanders reported feeling a 7.4 magnitude quake early Friday, which struck 700km northeast of Gisborne.

On Tuesday, a 5.1 magnitude quake hit just offshore in the eastern Bay of Plenty.
