A sinister letter warning a flat of women in Christchurch to move out because there was a "male predator" in the neighborhood was actually written by a jealous wife.

The note, which was left in Canterbury student Selina Hager's letterbox on Tuesday, was addressed to "all female residents".

"I am writing to inform you that there is a male predator living in your neighbourhood and he has shown a particular interest in you ladies," it said.

"I would strongly advise that you keep all your curtains closed at all times and find another flat to live and that you move out of your current flat as soon as possible," it went on to say.

The note also suggested the women should tell their landlord about the situation so the flat could only be rented to men in the future.

After Hager, 22, found the note she posted a picture on Facebook in an effort to gather information about it. She also reported it to police.

However, Hager started to suspect the note was actually left by a woman who lived on her street, according to Stuff.

Hager told Stuff she gave the woman and her husband a table that had been left by the old tenants. The woman then sent the flat a note asking for proof the landlord gave permission for them to give away the table, which Hager supplied.

Hager told Stuff the woman was the only one who had sent the flat a note since they moved in. She went to talk to the woman but she didn't answer the door. Later Hager got a text asking for her to "stay away" from her. The woman also asked her to move out of the neighbourhood again.

In another later text the woman admitted that she wrote the letter because she thought her husband had flirted with the women in the flat when picking up the table. She said she was insecure but that the flat was in no danger.

“The only reason I wrote the letter was it hurt me when my husband flirted with you both in front of me that day when we picked up the table and that he fancies you and thought you fancied him."

In a follow up text the woman said she was "deeply sorry", according to Stuff.

Hager told Stuff she was angry but wouldn't move because of the financial stress it would cause.

Police are investigating the note and say it is being taken seriously.
