Auckland's Sky Tower is shining bright blue on Saturday night to honour fallen police officer Matthew Hunt.

Hunt was shot dead on Friday after trying to carry out a routine traffic stop. Another officer was seriously injured, as was a member of the public. A 24-year-old man has been charged with murder, attempted murder, driving dangerously causing injury, while a woman wanted in relation to the shooting has been taken into custody.

To mark the 28-year-old officer's death, the first Kiwi cop to die in the line of duty since 2009, SkyCity announced on Saturday it would light the Sky Tower blue.

"Our thoughts are with Constable Hunt's family and the entire New Zealand police community mourning this tragic loss," a statement from the company said.

"We would like to convey our deepest gratitude for the hard work every New Zealand police officer displays in safeguarding our community."

Social media on Saturday evening was filled with photos of the blue tower lighting up the city.

SkyCity says it lights the tower different colours as a "symbol of respect or solidarity" for charities, community initiatives, holidays, milestones or events.
