A "strong" earthquake has hit in the eastern Bay of Plenty.

According to GeoNet, the 5.1 magnitude shake hit just before 5:30am on Tuesday at a depth of 28km. It struck offshore south-west of Te Kaha. GeoNet says the shaking was "strong".

Within minutes, hundreds of people had reported the shake on the GeoNet website, with most reporting a "light" shake. Those reporting the quake felt it around Whakatane, Gisborne and as south as Wellington.

"Wow big shake in Ohope," one person said on Twitter.

"Waking up to an earthquake this morning in Tauranga."
