Auckland's new shopping precinct Commercial Bay officially opened to the public on Thursday morning.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Auckland's Mayor Phil Goff helped to cut the ribbon to the $1 billion development located at the bottom of Queen Street.

The new building is in the place of the Downtown Shopping Centre which was opened between 1974 and 2016 and demolished shortly after.

Now 120 new retailers have opened their doors in Commercial Bay, including fashion stores, hair and beauty salons, cafes and a New York-style food hall Harbour Eats.

Precinct Properties Chief Executive Scott Pritchard says the opening is at a poignant time considering the country's recent move to alert level 1, signalling the opportunity to kickstart the country's economy.

"Despite the extraordinary circumstances we are opening under, I am extremely delighted to welcome Aucklanders and visitors to a new and exciting part of the city where they can shop, eat, drink and experience all Commercial Bay has to offer," he says.

"During this crucial time as New Zealand moves to restart its economy after lockdown, I encourage people to support these retailers and food operators."
