Weather: Tornado tears down south Auckland street before smashing into dairy

Shocking footage has emerged of the moment a tornado tore through a street in south Auckland.

The twister was one of three to occur in the last 24 hours, in Mangawhai, Papamoa and Auckland.

The Auckland tornado tore apart buildings, roofs and trees on Saturday morning - including a showroom in East Tamaki which lost the whole side of the store.

Newshub has obtained a new video showing the twister hitting the Victoria Dairy on Carruth Road in Papatoetoe.

Flowers sitting outside and signage gets swept away down the street and across the road, as rubbish bins also go flying.

Another angle shows a neighbouring property's trampoline being thrown through the air and down the road, before ending up wrapped around a power pole outside the dairy.

A witness told Newshub it wasn't the only one being blown around.

"At around 9am it started raining very heavily all of a sudden, and the wind was extremely strong," they said.

"We stayed inside then we heard a few large bangs and saw one trampoline on the road, one smashed into the pole outside the dairy, and all the flowers and advertising had blown to pieces scattered onto the road."

They said one of the trampolines came from a property "a few blocks down".

"The owner of the trampoline was astonished as he went looking for it and couldn't believe it ended up here."
