What it's like living as a refugee in New Zealand

Tomorrow marks World Refugee Day and a new report, based on a national survey of New Zealand paints a shocking but divided picture of Kiwi's attitudes towards refugees.

A fifth of Kiwis believe we should not accept any refugees, however positively more than half believe we should.

And a similar proportion of those who don't believe we should accept refugees also believe they pose a security risk to New Zealand.

Millennials… Or those ages between thirty and forty-four are the least supportive age group when it comes to refugee settlement in New Zealand, with the most supportive group being Gen Z. 

However, just under half of the respondents who support refugee resettlement in New Zealand said "we should help people in need".

And those on the other side who do not support housing resettlement cite a housing "shortage" as their reasoning. 

Bilal Nasier fled war-torn Afghanistan with his family when he was just four-years-old, claiming asylum in New Zealand, growing up here. undoubtedly facing the stigma and judgement some New Zealanders still carry.
