Auckland trains have come to an urgent stop after a car became stuck on the tracks in Avondale.

Police say it appears the driver got his vehicle caught on the tracks after the barrier arms had come down at the St Jude Street crossing.

The car wasn't hit by the oncoming train, but a police spokesperson understands the driver suffered a medical event and has been transported to hospital in a moderate condition.

Trains on the western line have been suspended while workers removed the car from the tracks.

An Auckland Transport spokesperson says it appeared the car began driving on the tracks by entering from a nearby crossing.

They also confirmed emergency services were at the scene.
