A selection of iconic New Zealand magazines will resume publishing immediately following Mercury Capital taking ownership of Bauer.

Woman's Day, New Zealand Woman's Weekly, and The Australian Women's Weekly NZ, along with Your Home & Garden, current affairs weekly NZ Listener and Air New Zealand's award-winning magazine Kia Ora will all return to the shelves, with delivery of magazines expected in September.

Bauer's Australia and New Zealand chief executive Brendon Hill says he is "delighted" to see the return.

"[I am] thrilled that this allows us to bring back a talented group of editorial and advertising staff to resume the publishing of these brands," he said in a statement on Friday.

In April, Bauer was forced to close its doors following a dramatic drop in revenue caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the time Hill called it "a devastating blow". However he says he never lost hope.

"We had always remained hopeful that we would be able to resume operations," he said. "The easing of COVID-19 restrictions and a more promising advertising market has allowed us to do that."

Mercury Capital has sold some titles to a variety of publishers. Metro will go to independent publisher Simon Chesterman and North & South will go to Konstantin Richter and Verena Friederike.

"Both magazines will resume publication as soon as possible," Hill said.
