Christchurch mayor Lianne Dalziel is taking leave of absence because of the health of her husband, Rob Davidson.

It has been previously reported that Davidson was diagnosed with cancer in 2018.

"I am taking a leave of absence due to the state of my husband's health and ask that our privacy be respected at this time," Dalziel said.

"I will be making no further comment."

Deputy mayor Andrew Turner will be acting mayor during this period.

A Christchurch City Council spokesperson said Mr Davidson's son Mike, a councillor, is not taking leave at this stage.
