Police have found the 16-year-old murderer who absconded from an Auckland youth facility.

The youth fled Korowai Manaaki in Wiri on Saturday night with another teen from the facility.

"He was sighted by Police staff in the Wiri area this afternoon [Thursday] and was taken into custody following a short foot pursuit," Detective Inspector Chris Barry from Counties Manukau Police says.

"The 16-year-old will face a charge of escaping from lawful custody and will appear in the Manukau Youth Court on Friday July 10."

He says he hopes the outcome brings reassurance to the local community.

Enquiries are still ongoing into where the second escapee is.

It's believed the pair broke through a reinforced window during their escape. Korowai Manaaki staff became aware they'd fled at 9:30pm.

The facility was fully staffed at the time the pair left.
