Shallow earthquake rattles South Island

An early morning earthquake was felt by thousands of residents in Christchurch on Tuesday. 

The magnitude 3.8 quake struck 15km south-east of the city just before 6:30am 

More than 5000 people reported feeling the 7km deep earthquake, with 110 describing it as "strong shaking". 

More than 1500 said the shake was "moderate", seven described it as "severe", and only three said it was "extreme", according to Geonet. 

Nearly 3000 people said it was "light" and 1200 said it was "weak".

People shared their experiences on Twitter with many bemoaning the early morning wake up. 

"Even the deep sleepers aren't sleeping here! All four of us awake."

Another person commented, "Yeah thanks for the wake up call at 6:30 in the morning Mother Nature, it's not like I was already having trouble sleeping". 

Several others were shocked by how strong the earthquake felt.

"Holy shit that was a big one," one person said. 

"What a jolt," another said. 

One man said that the quake shook his entire apartment. 

"That was a wee shake! Walking down stairs and felt the whole apartment rattling."
