People across the North Island are waking up to uprooted trees and downed power lines after a night of wild weather.

Fire and Emergency attended more than 50 weather related calls in the Northland-Auckland region.

Heavy rain and powerful winds tore across Auckland, Northland and Waikato late on Sunday night, wreaking havoc across the regions.

A section of Auckland's Tamaki Drive has reopened after "tidal inundation and strong winds" forced its closure shortly before 9pm on Sunday.

Half an hour later more traffic chaos broke out when a crash on the southern motorway closed both southbound lanes at Mt Wellington.

One person was moderately injured in the collision, and the motorway was closed so oil could be cleaned off the road. It was reopened by 11pm.

Metservice meteorologist Andy Best told Newshub the wind reached speeds of 113 kilometers per hour near Whangaparaoa as rain pelted the region.

From 7pm until around midnight Auckland recorded between 15 and 16 millimeters of rain every hour.
