Police say it's "only a matter of time" before they catch the two teenagers who escaped an Auckland youth justice facility on Saturday.

The search to find convicted murderer Haami Hanara, 16, and Sean Ratu, 17, continues after they escaped through a window of Korowai Manaaki Youth Justice Residence.

Counties Manukau Police Detective Inspector Chris Barry says the investigation is being taken extremely seriously.

"It is only a matter of time before we catch up with this pair," Barry says. "They need to do the right thing and hand themselves in."

Hanara stabbed homeless man Kelly Donner to death in Hastings in 2018 when he was just 14-years-old.

Information provided by the public is being followed up as part of police enquiries.

Police ask civilians not to approach Hanara as he is considered dangerous.

People who may have information on his whereabouts can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
