Motorists told to delay travel through central North Island as snowy blast closes key roads

Motorists are being urged to delay travel through the central North Island after heavy snow caused the closure of several main roads.

On Thursday, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency warned that State Highway 1 Desert Road and State Highway 49 from Tohunga Junction (Ohakune) to Waiouru are both closed.

State Highway 4 is also closed between Raetihi and Whanganui after a truck rolled and is blocking the road.

The Taihape to - Napier Road is also closed due to snowfall.

Waikato system manager Cara Lauder said the alternative routes will take longer and will be snowy and icy.

"The alternative routes, via State Highway 3 New Plymouth or State Highway 5 Napier will add considerable time to people’'s journeys."

"We are also advising caution on SH5 between Taupo and Napier. Be prepared for winter driving conditions, including snow and ice."

If people can't delay their trips, Lauder urged them to plane ahead and allow extra time.

"Maintain a greater following distance between your vehicle and the one in front, and to slow down and be prepared for unexpected hazards."

Chilly weather is also causing problems in other places around the country.

Early Thursday morning the Rimutaka Hill near Wellington was closed due to snow. It is open again but drivers are being urged to take extra care and drive to conditions.

Snow also fell to 350m on Canterbury's Port Hills overnight. As of 10am Thursday, the Summit Rd between Le Bons Bay and Little Akaloa in Banks Peninsula remained restricted to four-wheel-drive vehicles.

"Extreme care is needed," a Christchurch Transport Operations Centre spokesman said.

Snow warnings were in place for the South Island's Lindis Pass, which was forecast to get 2 to 4cm of snow between 6am and 10am.
