A Hawke's Bay owner's dog was accidentally pulled behind a vehicle without realising its lead was entangled in the boot.

According to a witness to the incident, who spoke to NZME, he had to wave the woman down to tell her the dog was being dragged but said the pet had already died by the time she stopped.

"She must've closed the boot and the dog has just jumped out as she's done that and got caught by the lead," the witness told Hawke's Bay Today.

A police spokeswoman told Newshub the incident happened near the intersection of Te Mata and River Rds, Havelock North about 9:20am on Friday.

"The caller advised that the driver did not appear to know the dog was there.

"Before police could locate the vehicle it had been stopped by stop/go workers."
