Police onsite at Gloriavale amid fresh allegations of sexual offences

Police have been making inquiries onsite at Gloriavale after reports of complaints of sexual offending.

It follows multiple sources telling Newshub of sexual assaults happening at the religious community over the past week.

Melody Pilgrim escaped Gloriavale six months ago. She's heard allegations about what's been happening at the West Coast religious community this week and isn't surprised.

Pilgrim told Newshub that just before she left, there were two meetings with the community leaders about alleged abuse.

"I was just like, 'I need to get my children out of here, this is not safe here'," Pilgrim said.

Newshub has heard about three alleged incidents in the past week involving a teenage male and young victims. It's understood police have spoken with a number of people onsite.

Liz Gregory helps Gloriavale members leave the community in her work with the Gloriavale Leavers' Support Trust. She believes there's a culture of sexual abuse there.

"This is part of a much bigger story that needs to be looked at. It is urgent and desperate and serious," she told Newshub.

A former Gloriavale member living on the West Coast has seen police at the location and says it's hard to have a fair investigation while victims are living on site under the leaders.

Last year, Just Standfast - a school teacher in the community - was convicted on a charge of sexual conduct with a child.

"They do their very best to minimise it, cover it, and make it go away by all means necessary," an anonymous Gloriavale member told Newshub.

Oranga Tamariki and police have both confirmed to Newshub they've been on site at Gloriavale this week, but refuse to go into details of their investigations or the allegations.

Newshub contacted Gloriavale directly, but they had no comment.
