Police are pleading for the public's help after an elderly man was killed in a Manurewa hit and run last week.

Jalil Mousses, a 79-year-old father of five and grandfather of 12, had been to visit family last Friday when he crossed Russell Rd at 7:30pm to get to his parked car. As he crossed, a white or light coloured Honda Stream "travelling at speed" towards Browns Rd struck him, failed to stop and fled the scene, police say.

The grandfather died at Middlemore Hospital from his injuries a short time later.

Officers are interested in hearing from anyone who may have seen a vehicle of that description with some damage to the front panelling.

Police say they are supporting his family and have been trying to find the vehicle and driver. The car was caught on CCTV turning into Browns Rd and police want anyone who knows who it belongs to to get in touch.

"This is an absolute tragedy for Mr Mousses' family," Acting detective inspector Warrick Adkin said.

"His family were due to celebrate his 80th birthday this week, and instead are mourning his death.

"We are determined to find who is responsible and urge anyone with information about this vehicle and its driver to contact us. To the driver, we implore you to do the right thing and turn yourself in, for the sake of his family."

Anyone with information can contact the Crime Squad on 09 261 1321 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
