A 17-year-old driver who travelled at speed down busy Auckland roads has been arrested.

Police say it became aware of a suspected stolen vehicle in Manukau just after 3pm on Monday, and the driver fled after failing to stop when asked.

"Police lost sight of the vehicle, which ended up on the Southern Motorway travelling at high speed northbound in heavy traffic," a spokesperson says.

"The Police Eagle helicopter monitored the vehicle from above as it travelled toward Mt Wellington then south to Manurewa weaving in and out of traffic and at times travelling on the wrong side of the road, putting other motorists at risk."

The car came to a stop shortly after police successfully deployed road spikes on Roscommon Rd, Manurewa. The 17-year-old was then taken into custody.

Police say a pursuit wasn't initiated at any point and it was "extremely fortunate" no members of the public were injured.
