Two Aucklanders named as Lake Rotomā crash victims

Two Aucklanders have been named as the victims of Saturday's car crash at Lake Rotomā in the Bay of Plenty.

David Alexander Fawcett Jarden, 54, and Bibi Ali, 53, died after a single-vehicle collision on State Highway 30.

Their silver Mercedes Benz plunged into the lake near a well-known diving spot where there is a gap in the barrier arm.

The two were from the Totara Heights and Ranui areas.

"Police extend their sympathies to the families and friends of Mr Jarden and Ms Ali at this difficult time," a police spokesperson said.

They are urging anyone who may have seen their vehicle in the Rotorua Lakes area on Saturday to contact the non-emergency 105 police number.

Police recovered the car and two bodies on Sunday morning after the dive squad conducted an underwater search.

Prior to the search, it was unknown how many occupants were inside the car at the time of the crash.
