Two people have died after a crash near Tokoroa, Waikato.
The crash occurred just after 1pm on State Highway 1 and involved three cars, police say.
Three other people sustained serious injuries and were taken to Waikato Hospital.
Five ambulance crews, four helicopters and a rapid response unit attended the incident, St John says.
"Police's first priority is to take care of the deceased and return them to their loved ones as soon as possible," a police spokesperson says.
"Diversions are still in place and police are working to reopen the road as soon as possible."
The crash occurred near Galaxy Rd. Inquiries are ongoing into the circumstances of the crash.
Police say motorists should exercise care and be aware of surface flooding in the area.
