A downhill skateboarder has posted breathtaking footage of thrillseekers riding down a steep Christchurch road, with one narrowly missing an oncoming vehicle.

Skateboarder Taylor Cook posted the footage on YouTube, with the caption "how to slide a longboard for beginners". The shocking video was believed to be filmed on Christchurch's Evans Pass and Scarborough Rds.

In the video, one of the riders is seen hurtling down the hill and crossing the centreline at a high speed. An oncoming car then appears around the corner, before the rider manoeuvres back to the other side.

The use of skateboards on the road is not illegal so long as riders abide by the road rules.

"If road users witness risky or dangerous behaviour on the roads, they are encouraged to contact police immediately so it can be followed up," a police spokesperson told Newshub.

"The message from police is that skateboard users must operate safely and responsibly, and follow the road rules just the same as any other road user.

"We would also encourage users to use safety helmets and gear."
