Water levels in a Bay of Plenty canal will be lowered to allow emergency services better access to the area after a vehicle went into its water.

Police say it received reports of a car in the Ruahihi Canal near McLaren Falls Rd, Omanawa at around 1:20pm on Wednesday.

"The canal water levels are to be lowered over the next two to three hours to allow better access to the area," a police spokesperson says.

"Until this happens police cannot confirm any details about the vehicle or any possible occupants."

Emergency services are still in the area.

Police say further updates will be given once available.
