Many Kiwis are again waking to a bitterly cold morning with many South Island centres plummeting below 0C overnight.

Temperatures dropped throughout the country with St Arnaud in the Nelson Lakes dropping to -6.2C, and south Canterbury's Lake Pūkaki Airport -5.5C.

The coldest part of the country currently is the south Canterbury town of Twizel; -4.4C as of 8:30am. The temperature at central Otago's Alexandra Airport dipped well into negative at -3.4C.

It's also cold in the South Island's main centres with Christchurch dropping to -1.5C and Dunedin Airport -1.9C.

The North Island meanwhile can expect a mostly fine weekend with 15C for Auckland on Saturday, 14C for Hamilton, and 13C for Wellington.

While the cold weather is set to lift for much of the weekend, another cold front will arrive between Sunday and Monday bringing wet, windy weather.

"On Sunday morning the cold front is likely to hit the South Island and push north Monday morning," MetService said in a statement.

"Expect some wet weather, especially in the west."
