Kiwis are waking to a bitterly cold morning on Friday as temperatures plummet across the country.

Temperatures fell to single digits for the entire country with Auckland sitting at just 2.5C, while Hamilton woke to a chilly -3C.

The coldest part of the country is Twizel at -4.2C, as of 6:30am. The warmest place is Mahia at 8.9C.

The temperature in Wellington also dropped with the capital waking to just 6C. Gisborne and Palmerston North have the warmest temperatures in the North Island at 7C.

It's also cold down south with Christchurch sitting at 1C and Queenstown -2C.

While Invercargill is one of the warmest places in the country at 8C, it's also the windiest and the wettest.

But there is good news, the cold weather is set to lift for the weekend and next week, providing a slight reprieve from the icy temperatures.

On Thursday heavy snow forced several key roads in the North Island to close including State Highway 1 Desert Road and State Highway 49 from Tohunga Junction (Ohakune) to Waiouru. The Taihape to - Napier Road was also closed because of heavy snow.

The Rimutaka Hill near Wellington was closed early in the morning but was soon reopened.

The closures follow a week of wild weather with 130km/h winds slamming the North Island on Wednesday.
