Te Papa will update its signs after two small children walked into an exhibit featuring a fully naked writhing man.

Jan Rosie told Stuff she was at the museum in Wellington on Saturday with her two-year-old granddaughter and her four-year-old cousin when they decided to check out the exhibition.

Turns out there was more on show than Rosie expected - a life-size video of a writhing naked man, accompanied by another nude body, with minimal warnings.

Rosie says she quickly ushered the children out of Lemi Ponifasio's MAU: House of Night and Day exhibition, but it was too late.

"My granddaughter could not stop all afternoon saying 'nudie bum'," Rosie told Stuff.

She complained to museum management, but said it was not the content of the exhibition she had a problem with - just the lack of signage.

Te Papa's head of art Charlotte Davy says the museum will make its signs more obvious and install new ones after Rosie's complaint.

"We want to give people clear information at the right time, so they can choose what they do and don't want to see."

Newshub has contacted Te Papa for comment.
