Repair work is underway after a burst water main on a busy road in Auckland's Penrose brought traffic to a halt on Tuesday morning.

Water was sent flooding down the southbound lanes of Great South Rd between Station and Penrose Rds.

It caused disruption to traffic and Auckland Transport (AT) is continuing to urge people to use an alternative route.

"Water main repair work on this section of Great South Rd is well underway, with one lane open in each direction through the area," AT said in a Twitter update on Tuesday afternoon.

"Allow extra time or avoid this route."
