Christchurch shooter escorted to Auckland maximum security prison

Warning: This article discusses the Christchurch mosque attack.

The Christchurch shooter has been taken to a maximum security prison where he will spend the rest of his life.

Brenton Harrison Tarrant was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole on Thursday for the murder of 51 people at the Al Noor and Linwood Mosques on March 15 last year.

Tarrant pled guilty to 51 charges of murder, 40 of attempted murder and committing a terrorist act.

On Friday morning he was escorted from the Justice Precinct in Christchurch out to a Hercules plane waiting at the airport.

He was taken out of the city to New Zealand's only maximum security prison unit at Paremoremo on Auckland's North Shore.

Tarrant's sentence is the first time life in prison without parole has been passed in New Zealand.

Justice Cameron Mander who presided over the trial said the evil of Tarrant's offending meant it was the only option.

"Your crimes are so wicked that even if you are detained until you die, it will not exhaust the requirements of punishment," said Judge Mander.
