Dunedin 12-year-old arrested after 20km joyride in stolen bus

A 12-year-old boy has been arrested in Dunedin after taking a joyride in a stolen bus and crashing into multiple parked cars.

Sergeant Anthony Bond told the Otago Daily Times the boy entered the Go bus at Ocean View on Thursday night where he was able to start it up.

He then drove the vehicle for around 20km from Brighton, via Green Island and the Southern Motorway.

"He has gone through the centre of Dunedin taking the one-way system, during the journey he has hit four vehicles and has been speeding and swerving in and out of traffic," Sgt Bond says.

"He has been unable to control the bus and it has come to a stop on Pine Hill Road where he ran off."

The police first received reports of the joyride before 9pm on Thursday and they told Newshub the boy was located a short time after reaching Pine Hill Road.

The boy was spoken to and referred to youth aid.

Police assured nobody was in the parked vehicles hit and there were no injuries.
