Kiwis urging Aucklanders to 'stay in Auckland' after flocking the domestic terminal

The first day of Auckland moving into COVID-19 alert level 2.5 saw Aucklanders packing out at the domestic departure terminal.

The rest of the country didn't seem to be too impressed, as they called for Aucklanders to stay put.

"Aucklanders are exploding out into the rest of NZ like a huge uncovered sneeze," a user tweeted.

"DEAR AUCKLANDERS. Stay in Auckland! We don't want you in Taupo, Cambridge, Tauranga, Rotorua. Stay away along with your yuppy black puffer jackets, fake fur pom-poms, SUV roof pods, and your COVID-19 virus, risking community transmission FOR THE REST OF NEW ZEALAND."

"The rest of the country is just incredibly angry that Aucklanders have been released from quarantine, necessitating extra health precautions for 2/3 of the nation. There, I've said it. Am I being unkind?"

Te Rōpū Whakakaupapa Urutā co-leader Dr Sue Crengle told The Project she's not 100 percent confident the cluster is well contained.

"We're not confident that we truly understand the extent of community transmission," she said.

"If I was the decision-maker, I think I would've held Auckland at level 3 for another week until we just had another week's worth of numbers and information about cases."

Jacinda Ardern made it clear yesterday the Government "will step up levels again if we need to," but she is confident that this won't happen.

"We are placing trust in our system, but we are also placing trust in our team of five million."
