A man has been charged after he allegedly attempted to evade police at an Auckland border checkpoint on Monday.

The 58-year-old was travelling north on State Highway 1 at Bombay and attempted to avoid officers by driving down the truck bypass lane, police say.

"A short pursuit was initiated but abandoned due to the dangerous manner of driving," Assistant Commissioner Richard Chambers says.

"Eagle located the vehicle at an address in Drury and the man was taken into custody without incident."

The man will appear at the Manukau District Court on August 31.
