A man has pleaded not guilty to a fatal fiery crash on Christchurch's Port Hills.

Tayla Alexander, 18, died in the crash which happened on Summit Rd in November. After sustaining critical injuries, Tayla's sister Sunmara, 16, died a fortnight later in hospital.

A man was subsequently charged with dangerous driving causing injury, two counts of dangerous driving causing death, and driving without an appropriate licence. He pleaded not guilty to those charges during an appearance in the Christchurch District Court on Tuesday.

He has continued name suppression and will reappear in court on October 22.

Earlier this year, Tayla and Sunmara's dad submitted a petition to the Christchurch City Council calling for better road safety on Summit Rd. Speed cameras were touted as an option.

"It's certainly not going away, it's probably getting worse and what do we do? I think speed cameras could be a way to go forward," councillor Tim Scandrett said last year.
