A 52-year-old businessman has pleaded guilty to escaping managed isolation in Hamilton to buy liquor.

Martin McVicar was sentenced in the Hamilton District Court on Thursday to 40 hours community work and fined $1000 for damaging a television in Hamilton's Distinction Hotel following a drinking session.

The man had returned to New Zealand from Australia following a family tragedy but declined a compassionate exemption and was “distraught and alone” when he went out to buy four beers and a bottle of red wine.
